The Worst of the Worst: America’s Most Hated Industries and Why They Suck

From mining companies to lawyers, there’s no shortage of terrible corporations and professions that are hated far and wide in America. Some are industries that we simply love to complain about while others are truly so terrible that we wonder how they’re still in existence. It’s easy to find something to rant about these days, but these five industries are hated for a reason. Here are some of America’s most detested industries and why they seriously suck.

Mining

The mining industry is so controversial and disliked that is often sparks protests and civil disobedience. But why? People worry that the mining industry is more concerned with their bottom line than they are about toxic pollution, the destruction of natural habitats and the promotion of dangerous working conditions. It’s not difficult to understand why environmentally- and socially-conscious Americans aren’t a fan.

Agree that mining companies are the worst? Why not write about it at Goldmining.Sucks?

Advertising

People hate advertising for a myriad of reasons, but above all for the frequency at which it infiltrates our everyday lives. Ads on the bus, ads on billboards, ads on Facebook, ads before a movie. We’ve all rolled our eyes at a cringe-inducing podcast ad or sprung for the “skip” button to bypass commercials on our favorite YouTube channels. With the ubiquity of advertising, Americans have grown incredibly weary. In fact, a recent study suggests that of the 98% of people who distrust the Internet, more than half do so because of the prevalence of certain types of advertisements.

Forestry

People like nature and long walks in lush forests. They also like oxygen. As climate change becomes a larger issue (read: crisis), industries that promote the devastation of hundreds of acres of trees don’t hold up well in popular opinion. It’s not just that people like pretty, green things—it’s that most of us recognize we actually depend on them to survive.

Airlines

Even those who love to travel will complain about how awful TSA procedures are, how sassy flight attendants can be, how often they’re seated next to a screaming baby or how the entire industry seems to exist as a series of delays and frustrations. Nevermind surges on peak travel days, pollution, intrusive security measures and a general lack of legroom once you’ve finally boarded your plane. Airlines are ultimately expensive and uncomfortable. We need them to connect us to the rest of the world, but we don’t have to like it.

Have a complaint? You’re likely not alone. Consider turning UnitedAir.Sucks or DeltaAir.Sucks into a feedback forum where fellow travelers can air their grievances.

Lawyers and Law Firms

Everyone is suspect of the legal system and the players within it—until they need counsel of their own, that is. People pay upward of $1000 an hour for corporate lawyers, which is enough to turn many people off the whole system. On top of that, there are legal associations ridden with corruption, failure and dishonesty, which have come into the spotlight thanks to the groundbreaking podcast, Serial, Netflix’s “Making a Murderer” and HBO’s “The Jinx.” If the general public was hesitant to trust lawyers before, these pop culture series did nothing to help them.
